‘It’s not unusual’: RFK Jr. downplays largest measles outbreak in decades as cases spread to Kentucky; Independent, February 27, 2025

Josh Marcus, Independent; ‘It’s not unusual’: RFK Jr. downplays largest measles outbreak in decades as cases spread to Kentucky

"During a Trump administration cabinet meeting, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. downplayed the ongoing measles outbreak in Texas that has killed a child and resulted in over 120 cases of the disease since January.

“We are following the measles epidemic every day,” Kennedy said during the meeting. “Incidentally, there have been four measles outbreaks this year. In this country last year there were 16. So, it’s not unusual. We have measles outbreaks every year.”

He described those hospitalized as part of the outbreak centered near Gaines County as “mainly for quarantine,” though a local official said otherwise...

It’s the first measles death in the U.S. since 2015, all the more notable because the disease was considered eliminated in the U.S. as of 2000 given widespread vaccination."

Coos Bay Library offers community fridge; The World, October 14, 2023

Bree Laughlin , The World; Coos Bay Library offers community fridge

"Now, Coos Bay Public Library patrons can obtain fresh produce six days a week during the library’s open hours.

Addis and his colleagues at the library partnered with South Coast Food Share and The Beet Food Systems Consortium, which are helping to support the project by providing the fridge and funding for food and operational costs.

The program has been so successful, Addis needs to restock the fridge multiple times per week. He also provides handouts with recipes and the health benefits of certain fruits of vegetables.

“The vast majority of people are just extremely appreciative. People are coming in and it's been getting more popular every day,” he said.

Everyone who enters the library is eligible for free produce. Patrons can ask an employee to unlock the fridge. They will receive the free healthy food items after being asked a few questions (name, address, # of people in household) that will only be used for statistics. The library does not share personal information."

Colorado bans doxing of public health workers amid rise in online harassment; The Washington Post, May 20, 2021

Meryl Kornfield, The Washington Post ; Colorado bans doxing of public health workers amid rise in online harassment

"Seeking to address the mounting online harassment endured by health workers across the state during the pandemic, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed a bill Tuesday making it illegal to post personal information about health workers, officials and their families that threatens their safety...

The law, which took effect immediately, makes doxing — or sharing a person’s private information such as an address or phone number — a misdemeanor. Violators could face up to 18 months in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Across the country, workers on the front lines of the pandemic have reported receiving threatening calls and vandalism at their workplaces and homes for being the messengers about masking and other public health precautions. Despite a marked rise in bullying of health-care workers globally, officials acknowledge rampant reports are only the “tip of the iceberg.”"

YouTube’s algorithms could be harming users looking for health information; Fast Company, July 15, 2020

ANJANA SUSARLA, Fast Company;

YouTube’s algorithms could be harming users looking for health information

"A significant fraction of the U.S. population is estimated to have limited health literacy, or the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information, such as the ability to read and comprehend prescription bottles, appointment slips, or discharge instructions from health clinics.
Studies of health literacy, such as the National Assessment of Adult Literacy conducted in 2003, estimated that only 12% of adults had proficient health literacy skills. This has been corroborated in subsequent studies.
I’m a professor of information systems, and my own research has examined how social media platforms such as YouTube widen such health literacy disparities by steering users toward questionable content."

Digital divide persists with online portals for cancer patients; Reuters, February 14, 2018

Lisa Rapaport, Reuters; Digital divide persists with online portals for cancer patients

"“Internet access is not uniform across populations,” said senior study author Dr. David Gerber, a researcher at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

“There exists a `digital divide,’ with certain groups having lower access to broadband Internet than others,” Gerber said by email.

The sheer volume of information in recent years may be overwhelming patients and discouraging them from using these portals, Gerber said."
