"The woman who filmed federal agents shooting and killing Alex Pretti still hasn’t been contacted by the government days later, only fanning accusations of a federal cover-up. 

“Have you been contacted by anyone from the federal government?” CNN’s Anderson Cooper asked Minnesota resident Stella Carlson, whose footage has been crucial in delegitimizing the Trump administration’s lies about Pretti. “FBI?”

“No, no, I have not. I do have a legal team now who are fielding much of that, and I am no longer accessible in those ways,” Carlson replied. 

“I talked to your attorney this morning; she said she had not received any outreach from the FBI or anybody from the federal government,” Cooper said.

“I do not think they have my name yet,” said Carlson, a shocking oversight given that it’s been four days since the shooting. She then expressed that she had zero confidence in a federal investigation into Pretti’s killing."

"Of the many lessons to be drawn from the administration’s retreat in Minneapolis, the most important is that Donald Trump can be stopped.

He spent his first year acting as though the 2024 election were the last time he would ever have to give a thought to public opinion. Now the myth that Trump is invincible has been exploded...

Trump’s capitulation would never have occurred if not for the heroic, disciplined resistance in Minneapolis. Faced with something like an occupying army that was systematically flouting the law, the people of Minneapolis thrust its abuse into the public eye, raising the political cost of Miller’s war until enough Republicans decided that they couldn’t bear to pay it.

Political theorists have long debated whether Trump and his movement should be described as fascist. On an intellectual level, the answer depends largely on which definition of fascism you choose (there are several). I have generally resisted the term because the definition I prefer, and the one most Americans probably think of when they hear the term, is not mere political oppression but a form of it so extreme that opposition becomes impossible.

That may be more or less Trump’s aspiration, and possibly our destiny. But this is not a fascist country, at least not yet."

"Since federal immigration raids started in December in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Episcopalians have joined rallies, vigils and other events alongside interfaith partners and thousands of other protesters...

Anti-federal immigration enforcement protests also have been held in other cities nationwide, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Illinois, and New York. Last weekend, Episcopalians, including Maine Bishop Thomas J. Brown, joined thousands of protesters in rallies in Maine in response to an ICE raid that launched on Jan. 21. in the New England state.

The Episcopal Church offers several resources for Episcopalians engaged in immigration advocacy work and peaceful protests, including its Protesting Faithfully Toolkit. The resource offers “spiritual grounding and practical resources for faithful presence at protests and public demonstrations.” The church’s Immigration Action Toolkit shares resources from organizations that address migrants’ legal rights."

"Episcopal clergy and lay leaders are among the hundreds of people of faith from across the United States who have traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for a day of public witness and political action on Jan. 23 in opposition to what they are calling an “occupation” of the city by federal immigration authorities.

The “ICE Out of Minnesota” day of action, organized by local advocacy groups and community partners, called for a daylong “unified statewide pause in daily economic activity,” as they urged businesses to close for the day, families to keep students home from school and employees to refuse to work (except emergency services).

Organizers scheduled an afternoon protest march in downtown Minneapolis as the day’s focal point, to demand that Immigration and Customs Enforcement leave the city and to call for justice for Renee Good, the 37-year-old resident who was shot and killed by ICE two weeks ago.

Minnesota’s Episcopal diocese invited members who were able to brave the day’s subzero temperatures to join Bishop Craig Loya and other clergy at the protest march. Other Episcopal leaders from outside the diocese have traveled to Minneapolis to show their support, including Washington Bishop Mariann Budde and Iowa Bishop Betsey Monnot.

“The response from clergy around the country, interfaith clergy, has been overwhelming,” Loya told Episcopal News Service in a phone interview on the eve of the day of action. He said event organizers were expecting 300 visitors and ended up confirming more than twice that number, with hundreds more expressing interest...

Episcopal congregations are joining a variety of efforts to assist residents who can’t leave their homes because they are afraid that ICE will arrest and detain them or their children. Neighborhood networks have mobilized, for example, to deliver groceries and other supplies to people at home and to accompany people to medical appointments and to schools.

Despite the cruelty carried out by federal authorities, Loya said he has been heartened by what he has witnessed of neighbors helping neighbors. That is “something much more powerful,” he said, “when people come together to love one another.”"

[Kip Currier: Following the conclusion of the 115th Annual Convention of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Episcopal Diocese, today I accompanied several Episcopal priests, a deacon, and a lay member for a prayer vigil where peaceful protests against the largest immigrant detention facility in the Northeast have been held for much of this year. The detention site is located near Clearfield County's small town of Philipsburg (a 30-40 minute drive from the main campus of Pennsylvania State University). Euphemistically referred to as the Moshannon Valley Processing Center, its blandly generic name -- and sign, seen below --  intentionally obscures its purpose and the individual people it holds. Numerous allegations of human rights and due process violations have been reported.]

"Clearfield County will make $1 million over five years to act as the middleman between ICE and the private contractor that operates the Moshannon Valley Processing Center, the largest immigration detention facility in the Northeast.

The county enters the final year of its contracts with ICE and the GEO Group as the Trump administration has intensified efforts to deport undocumented immigrants.

Moshannon — which had already been accused of physical and psychological abuse, inadequate health care, and poor conditions — has also come under increased scrutiny over the past several months after the hanging death of Chaofeng Ge, a Chinese citizen who was detained at the facility near Philipsburg.

Local advocates have protested, called for Moshannon’s closure, and pressured county commissioners not to renew the contracts for the detention center."

"A ruling in federal court Thursday restricts the tactics used by the Department of Homeland Security as they engage with protesters, members of the media and the public, the ABC7 I-Team has learned.

The temporary restraining order, or TRO, governs the behavior of federal agents in the entire Northern District, not just at the Broadview ICE processing facility, where there have seen numerous flare ups between ICE agents and the public.

It limits the indiscriminate use of riot control weapons, against peaceful protesters and journalists and requires nearly all federal agents to have visible identification even when wearing riot gear.

Rev. David Black of the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago was shot in the head with a pepper bullet while peacefully protesting outside of the facility in Broadview last month by an ice agent standing on the roof of a building. He was able to get up after being hit."

Governor Ron DeSantis added: "If you're driving on one of those streets, and a mob comes and surrounds your vehicle and threatens you, you have a right to flee for your safety. And so if you drive off and you hit one of these people that's their fault for impinging on you — you don't have to sit there and just be a sitting duck and let the mob grab you out of your car and drag you through the streets."

Organizers expect 1,800 rallies will take place on Saturday for “a nationwide day of defiance” in every state and major city across the country—except Washington, D.C., as to avoid clashes with the Army’s 250th anniversary celebrations, which will be held that day in the nation’s capital (more on that below).

In a statement to Fast Company, the No Kings organizers described their event as “peaceful, organized, and united.” They added: “Make it clear: We don’t do kings in this country.”"

"Trump and his regime are rapidly creating such an infrastructure, in five steps:

(1) declaring an emergency on the basis of a so-called “rebellion”, “insurrection”, or “invasion”;

(2) using that “emergency” to justify bringing in federal agents with a monopoly on the use of force (Ice, the FBI, DEA, and the national guard) against civilians inside the country;

(3) allowing those militarized agents to make dragnet abductions and warrantless arrests, and detain people without due process;

(4) creating additional prison space and detention camps for those detained, and

(5) eventually, as the situation escalates, declaring martial law.

We are not at martial law yet, thankfully. But once in place, the infrastructure of a police state can build on itself.

Those who are given authority over aspects of it – the internal militia, dragnets, detention camps, and martial law – seek other opportunities to invoke their authority.

As civilian control gives way to military control, the nation splits into those who are most vulnerable to it and those who support it. The dictatorship entrenches itself by fomenting fear and anger on both sides.

Right now, our major bulwarks against Trump’s police state are the federal courts and broad-based peaceful protests – such as the one that many of us will engage in this coming Saturday 14 June, on the No Kings Day of Action.

It is imperative that we remain peaceful, that we demonstrate our resolve to combat this tyranny but do so non-violently, and that we let America know about the emerging infrastructure of Trump’s police state and the importance of resisting it.

These are frightening and depressing times. But remember: although it takes one authoritarian to establish a police state, it takes just 3.5% of a population to topple him and end it."
