As Debt Rises and Job Prospects Dim, Some Say It's Time to Put a Warning Label on Graduate School; Chronicle of Higher Education, 12/9/12

Stacey Patton, Chronicle of Higher Education; As Debt Rises and Job Prospects Dim, Some Say It's Time to Put a Warning Label on Graduate School: "The student-debt problem, coupled with the dearth of jobs, has sparked a national conversation about whether going to graduate school is worth it. Attendees at the conference said it is unethical to keep admitting students to programs and training them for jobs that don't exist while they are racking up piles of debt only to risk finding university employment as just an adjunct, or obtaining some other low-wage job for which a graduate degree is not necessary, or ending up on food stamps."

  1. Dr. Currier, your link is broken. It's got an extra 'ht' at the front.

  2. I have to admit, when Dr. Cox told my entering class (08-09) that Pitt had a 90% acceptance rate for on campus students and 99% for online, I was horrified. Ethically, Pitt should shrink its iSchool--maybe work with Clarion or Drexel, so students still have a diverse offering of courses--and only admit students who stand at a chance of getting a job after graduation. (The MLIS is not, like some humanities degrees, "an education for education's sake." It's a means to an end, and that end is a job as an information professional.)

There's no shortage of librarians on the horizon--hopefully that story has stopped circulating, by now, though it was popular when I was in school. There ARE, however, MANY underemployed or unemployed MLIS graduates from all over the country. (I'm not complaining on my own behalf--I got a job before I graduated, though I had to drive 4000 miles to get here. But it pains me to see so many MLIS programs happily taking money from so many people, when there aren't jobs available for most of them.)

Also, hi. :) Sorry for ranting. I enjoyed your copyright class. Glad to see you're still blogging!
